What it is
What is Grounding?
Grounding, also known as earthing, is the practice of reconnecting with the present moment and with the earth beneath you. It is a return to stillness. A deliberate act of anchoring your energy, your body, and your awareness into the here and now. Whether through breath, movement, touch, or intention, grounding invites you to slow down and come home to yourself.
The history
Ancient Roots, Modern Return
Grounding is not new. Across many cultures and traditions, there has long been an understanding of the importance of connection to the natural world. From time spent barefoot on the earth to moments of stillness beneath open skies, these practices were part of everyday life, not something separate from it. Within this, there has been a quiet recognition of the healing power of direct contact with the earth.
In Eastern traditions, practices such as Qi Gong and yoga have, for thousands of years, reflected similar principles, bringing awareness back into the body and into contact with the present moment. Many Indigenous cultures have long held a deep understanding of the relationship between human wellbeing and the land, recognising the importance of living in connection with it.
In more recent years, Western research into what is often referred to as earthing has begun to explore these ideas through a scientific lens. Emerging studies suggest that the earth carries a subtle electrical charge, and that direct contact with it may have measurable effects on the human body and nervous system.
